Everybody I know in Minnesota is worried about winter this year. Winter in Minnesota is serious—we have not only snow but arctic-level cold. The walkways get so icy that going out for a stroll means slipping and sliding and trying hard not to fall.
Winter in the time of pandemic is even more serious. During the summer, we had some small gatherings outdoors with friends. Can’t do that in winter.
We’ll all be more isolated—locked in and boarded up for a very long time. Winter in Minnesota can go on and on through April.
This year winter arrived early. We had a snowstorm in mid-October—an all-time record! Then the temperature dropped to the 20s.
And escape isn’t an option for us. Last year, we went to California for part of the winter. We don’t plan to travel this year—not until we can feel safe.
Life is short. I don’t want to postpone my life and just sit around waiting until there’s no pandemic.
So, I have a plan to make the best of winter in Minnesota—continuing a lot of what I’m already doing:
1. Keeping in touch: I’m grateful for Zoom and other software that help us to be social. It’s not the same as in-person visiting—but it’s okay—and can be good. I also phone new and old friends. I have a new sense of urgency and, in fact, have done much more reaching out to friends than I did in pre-pandemic times. I also spend time with my nice husband—we’re lucky to have each other.
2. Keeping in shape: With appropriate clothing (and a little caution), I ought to be able go outdoors for walks most days. Walking with a friend will be even better. For indoor exercise, we just ordered a stationary bike. We also have exercise classes on Zoom.
3. Creating: I have writing and art projects—so whatever the weather, I always have stuff that fills my mind and my hands–and my soul. I also give talks over Zoom, not just locally but anywhere in the world.
4. Tasking: Cooking, making the bed, watering indoor plants, cleaning up, etc. may not be brilliant but they bring order to my life.
Like everybody else, I’m anxious about what winter will really be like for me in this pandemic time. Even so, winter or not—I feel grateful for the fullness of my days.
